At Heyes Lane we believe the teaching of Art will create a thriving society with meaningful expression, imagination and flourishing cultures. The children will foster transferable skills and boost overall academic achievement, leading to better future work opportunities, enhanced well-being and self-esteem.
Our artists will be critical thinkers, understanding how art can have a profound impact on society, which ignites curiosity and encourages creativity. When children leave our school, our artists will have the cultural capital to consider aspects of art and inspire a journey of artistic development.
CURRICULUM CONTENT AND DESIGN
The children at Heyes Lane will benefit from a rich, broad and balanced Art Curriculum. They will experience and experiment with a wide range of materials as they explore art and grow and flourish into artists. They will build a growing awareness of art which runs through their own history, culture and other cultures as they are introduced to the world of artists and works of art. Within art, we strive to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry based learning opportunities.
Emphasis is placed on investigative learning opportunities to help children gain a coherent knowledge of understanding of Art throughout the years. Our Art Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and we focus on the progression of knowledge and skills.
Progression & Outcomes
We believe that an artistic experience fuels imagination and in turn imagination fuels creativity. This being said, at Heyes Lane, we understand that Art is more than just putting pen and paint to paper. The sequence of learning embodies history, forming critical opinions, a variety of artistic skills and so much more.
Art begins at the earliest of ages at Heyes Lane. During the children’s time in EYFS they will begin to experiment with colours and how they mix. They will be able to start recognising 2D shapes and creating a variety of patterns. Children will begin to manipulate malleable materials in a variety of ways including rolling, pinching and kneading. EYFS is where children’s love for art truly flourishes making it a prime time to ignite the artistic spark within them.
During KS1, children begin to bring the skills taught in EYFS to life by building on them and implementing them in different ways. The children will adopt a “sketchbook habit” which they can take pride in as this will move with them throughout their time at Heyes Lane. Within the sketchbooks, the sequence of learning will become much more evident with a variety of skills. Children will apply the skills and history they have learnt to create final pieces of artwork that they can take pride in. They will begin to understand that making mistakes can be liberating and open up new opportunities whilst encouraging critical thinking. An example of skills that will taught include colour theories, a variety of line making and investing different textures. Children will begin to learn about significant artists and movements and how these have impacted art today such as Monet, Van Gogh and Pollock.
Throughout KS2, children will have bespoke variety of the skills that underpin the elements of art. This is the time that children will begin to find their own style and be able to critic work from both themselves, their peers and famous artists with the maturity to also take criticism on board to adapt and improve their work. Children will be able to spend more time working on the aspects of art that they love whilst also adding new skills to their artistic portfolio. Children will become independent artists whilst creating their own work and will be able to choose appropriate paint, paper and implements to adapt and extend work.
