WELCOME TO RECEPTION

We hope you are as excited as we are to begin your Reception journey, as we step into a year filled with discovery, imagination and growing independence.

Reception is an important stage within the Early Years Foundation Stage, where children continue building on the strong foundations laid in Nursery. Throughout the year, we will nurture confidence, resilience and curiosity as children deepen their understanding of the world around them and develop the skills needed for lifelong learning.

Our approach combines carefully planned adult-led teaching with rich opportunities for child-led exploration. Alongside focused sessions where key knowledge and skills are taught explicitly, children will have time to follow their own interests through purposeful play. This balance ensures learning remains both structured and engaging, helping to maintain enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the year.

Our broad themes provide a cohesive structure to learning throughout the year, carefully planned to ensure clear progression across the Reception curriculum. All content is thoughtfully differentiated to reflect children’s individual ages and stages of development, providing appropriate challenge and support as they move forward in their learning journey.

High-quality key texts are central to our curriculum. Carefully chosen stories provide inspiration and meaningful context for learning, enriching vocabulary and sparking imagination. These texts form the foundation for discussion, exploration and creative experiences across all areas of learning.

In phonics, children will continue developing their knowledge of sounds, blending and segmenting words as they begin to read and write with increasing confidence. In mathematics, they will build a secure understanding of numbers to ten and beyond, exploring counting, comparison, patterns and early calculation skills. 

Every activity introduced is designed with clear developmental goals in mind, aligned to the EYFS framework and the Development Matters statements. This ensures that all learning is meaningful and supports progress across both the prime and specific areas of development.

Our classroom is a place of exploration and possibility. Through role play, creative activities, construction and outdoor learning, children will develop communication skills, collaboration, independence and problem-solving abilities — all essential foundations for future success.

Alongside daily learning, children will take part in special celebrations, shared experiences and memorable Reception events that mark this significant year in their school journey.

There may be moments of challenge as children encounter new learning, but we will be there to guide, encourage and celebrate every achievement along the way. In Reception, we value perseverance, positivity and pride in progress.

The Reception Team

AUTUMN

The beginning of Reception is a very special time as we settle into school life together. We learn our new routines, explore our classroom and outdoor area, and make new friends. We practise putting our belongings away independently, choosing our own learning and tidying up carefully at the end of the day. We talk about our feelings and discover who can help us in school. Each day we grow in confidence, becoming more independent and ready to try new things. As we settle in, we begin to see ourselves as happy, capable learners who belong in our Reception family.

Our first theme is I Am Special, I Am Me. We celebrate what makes each of us unique. We share our families, our favourite things and the things we are good at. We create self-portraits, read stories about being proud of who we are and learn how to show kindness to others. We explore questions such as: What makes me special? How can I be a kind friend? What makes my family unique? How are we the same and how are we different?

As we approach the festive time of year, our focus changes to Let’s Have a Celebration. We learn about a range of celebrations from different religions and cultures, such as Christmas, Diwali and Hanukkah, as well as birthdays and family traditions. We share stories, music and food linked to these special times and talk about why they are important to different people. We sing songs, create artwork and enjoy performing together, learning how celebrations bring communities together.

SPRING

As we return after the holidays, we are ready for new adventures and discoveries together. We begin the theme, Let’s Go on a Journey. We explore different ways to travel, from buses and trains to aeroplanes and boats. Through stories and imaginative play, we journey to new places near and far. We create maps, build vehicles and talk about our own experiences of going on trips with our families. We explore questions such as: Where would you like to go? How can we travel there? What might we see on our journey? We learn about the world around us and begin to understand that different people live in different places.

Our second theme is Wiggly Wonders. As the weather begins to change, we explore the natural world around us. We look closely at minibeasts, plants and signs of spring. We observe worms, caterpillars and other tiny creatures, learning how they grow and change. Through hands-on investigation, we ask questions such as: Where do minibeasts live? Why are they important? What do plants need to grow? We develop our curiosity, care for living things and enjoy discovering the wonders of nature.

SUMMER

Once Upon an Adventure is our theme first in the summer term. We step into the magical world of traditional tales and exciting stories. Through storytelling, role play and small world play, we become brave knights, clever princesses, fearsome dragons and daring explorers. We retell familiar tales and begin to create our own imaginative stories. We explore questions such as: Who are the heroes and villains? What makes a good adventure? How does a story begin and end? Through drawing, writing and role play, we build confidence in sharing our ideas and using our growing vocabulary.

Our second theme is Treasures Everywhere. We discover that treasures can be found all around us. From shiny shells and interesting stones to special objects from home, we learn that treasure is not always gold and jewels, but things that are meaningful and important to us. We explore the seaside, maps and simple pirates’ adventures, and think about caring for our world. We ask: What is a treasure? Where can we find it? Why is it special? We sort, collect, count and describe our findings, developing our curiosity and love of discovery.

As the year comes to an end, we begin preparing for our move to Year 1. We talk about our feelings, visit our new classroom and meet our new teachers. We reflect on how much we have grown and all that we have achieved in Reception. With confidence, independence and excitement, we get ready for our next big adventure.

Values

A Connected Environment

We believe that Reception is a connected environment where every child is valued. We love to work together as a class and enjoy activities that help us make friends and learn from each other. Going on a nature walk, building a class castle, or sharing stories together helps us connect and work as a team. We also come together to celebrate special events, like during our Celebrations theme, our Christmas performance, and whole-school events which help us feel part of the school community.

A Creative Outlook

We take a creative approach to learning in Reception, which helps make every day exciting. We use stories, role play, drawing, building, and music to bring our learning to life. For example, we might pretend to be explorers on a jungle adventure, create castles for princesses and dragons, or make our own musical instruments. We also enjoy using our creativity to solve problems, like figuring out how to build the tallest tower, create a map for a treasure hunt, or design a new playground obstacle.

A Positive Mindset

Our year begins with learning how to settle into Reception and feeling happy at school. We practice being confident, trying new things, and helping each other. We set small goals, like learning to zip our coats or write our names and celebrate our achievements. Throughout the year, we learn to be brave, to keep trying when something is tricky, and to take pride in our learning. We also learn from stories about kind and courageous characters and reflect on how we can be positive and helpful every day.

A Caring Nature

In Reception, we care for each other and our classroom. We say good morning, share toys, help our friends, and show kindness in all we do. We also care for the world around us by looking after plants, animals, and our outdoor areas. We take part in special events, such as fundraising for Children in Need, learning how to help others and why it is important to be kind to everyone.

An Active Approach

We are active learners in Reception, exploring our classroom and outdoor areas with curiosity and energy. We enjoy climbing, running, and balancing, as well as joining in games, dancing, and sports activities. Our learning is hands-on, whether we are planting seeds, building with blocks, or playing number games. We also learn about keeping our bodies healthy through exercise, outdoor play, and trying new physical challenges, helping us grow strong and confident.

Home Learning in Reception

Home learning in Reception is designed to reinforce key skills taught in school, while nurturing confidence and a love of learning.

The Importance of Reading at Home

Reading regularly at home is one of the most impactful ways you can support your child’s progress. Just a few minutes each day strengthens fluency, builds vocabulary, develops comprehension skills and fosters a lifelong love of books. Consistent practise helps children to become confident, independent readers and makes a significant difference to their overall development.

We encourage children to be read to daily at home, as well as having opportunities to read independently. Each week, Reception children bring home three books:

--Phonic Home Reader
 This book is studied in school that week. Your child should be able to read it with growing fluency. Re-reading is essential for developing fluency, confidence and expression. This is an opportunity for your child to feel successful and celebrate their progress.

--Star Book (Colour Banded Book)
 This book is colour banded and should be shared with an adult. It has not been read in school beforehand, but your child should be able to access it with increasing independence. Guidance to support discussion can be found inside the front and back covers if needed.

--Library Book
 This book is purely for enjoyment and to foster a lifelong love of reading. It is intended to be read to your child — a chance to share a story, develop language and simply enjoy time together with a book.

Phonics Homework

Each week, children will bring home phonics homework to review the sounds and tricky words they have been learning in class that week. Regular practise supports accurate recall and helps children apply their knowledge in both reading and writing.
